New road surface on the way for State Highway 2 Masterton

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 17 Mar 2026 12:24pm | Wellington

Drivers travelling through Masterton can look forward to a new and improved road surface at the northern end of town later this month.

As part of the ongoing state highway summer maintenance season, contractors will be resurfacing the highway between the Queen Street/SH2 roundabout and Te Ore Ore Road.

The work is scheduled to be done as night works on Sunday, 22 March, Tuesday, 24 March and Wednesday, 25 March, from 9 pm to 4:30 am.

The work is scheduled to be done at night when traffic volumes are lower. This reduces overall disruption and delays for road users.

The work will require road closures and local road detours. Full closures are safer for road crews and the public and allow the work to be completed faster.

State Highway 2 will be closed between Lincoln Road and Second Street. A local road detour will be available via Second Street, Totara Street, Te Ore Ore Road, Colombo Road, Church Street, and Lincoln Road (see detour map below).

This is a longer route and will require extra travel time, so drivers should plan their journeys accordingly.

The section of highway being resurfaced carries over 7,000 vehicles each day. The planned repairs are critical to keeping the road in good condition and ensuring grip and skid resistance levels that help keep drivers safe.

The work is weather-dependent, and schedules may change at short notice.

Resurfacing work must be completed in good weather conditions to ensure it is durable and effective. Drivers are encouraged to check road conditions before they travel.
