Night closures as work advances on SH75/Halswell Road

Night closures lasting about a week are planned for part of State Highway 75/Halswell Road in Christchurch, as further progress is made on a major roading project in the area.

From Sunday 22 March 2026, closures to all traffic are scheduled nightly from 8pm until 6am the following day, for SH75/Halswell Road between SH75/Curletts Road and Augustine Drive/Monsaraz Boulevard. Side streets in the area will also be closed at the intersections with SH75/Halswell Road. These closures will enable roading teams to lay the final asphalt surface on the road, which has been the subject of broader work as part of the SH75/Halswell Road Improvements project(external link).

Detour routes available via Hoon Hay Road and Sparks Road will be sign-posted (see map below). This work will also affect Bus Route 7; Metro Canterbury will have notices up at the affected bus stops and there will be a detour once the closures are in place. While these night closures are expected to last about a week, the work is weather dependent and may be extended at short notice. An extra week will be available if needed because of delays for weather or other reasons.

Operating at night under full road closures means that the roading teams can pave larger sections of road in one go and lay the asphalt more safely, more quickly and with a higher quality finish. The teams will work north to south each night and should only be working close to most properties for a night or two. Line marking on the road will also be completed during these night work periods.

This work marks the last major stage of construction for the SH75/Halswell Road Improvements project. The project is aimed at improving bus journeys and reliability, safety for all users of this stretch of road, and supporting growth in the area with more travel choices.

We encourage road users to plan ahead for these night closures, and we thank people for their patience while this surfacing work is completed.
