Night closures for Frankton intersection switch

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 26 Mar 2026 4:39pm | Otago

Progress on roading improvements in the Queenstown suburb of Frankton means that a series of upcoming road closures will be required in and around the intersection of State Highways 6 and 6A (BP Roundabout).

The night closures (10pm-6am) and other restrictions scheduled for Tuesday 7 April-Thursday 9 April, and Sunday 12 April-Monday 13 April, will apply to the SH6/6A intersection and to its approaches from Joe O’Connell Drive, Gray Street and McBride Streets, including the main entrance to Terrace Junction. The work on the Sunday and Monday is weather dependent and any change required in the schedule will be notified.

Detours will be available (see map below). Traffic will need to use McBride and Gray Streets to get to and from SH6A/Frankton Road and SH6/Kawarau Road. No Parking signs will be in place on parts of Gray and McBride Streets from 48 hours prior, so people can use these streets safely during closures. Buses will also use the Gray/McBride Streets detour route. Access to SH6/Frankton-Ladies Mile Highway will be via Lucas Place and Hawthorne Drive. Right hand turning into Hansen Road from SH6/Frankton-Ladies Mile Highway, and right hand turning out of Joe O’Connell Drive, will be reinstated during these closures.

The closures will allow roading crews to safely switch all traffic connections to a new temporary, fully marked roundabout at the intersection, nearer the Frankton Golf Centre. This temporary roundabout will be in place ahead of a transition to an enhanced intersection controlled by traffic signals, with extra space for more traffic lanes and new dedicated bus lanes (read more about the wider roading project below).

SH6A/Frankton Road residents in the closure area will be escorted through by traffic management staff. The Terrace Junction main entrance will not be available after 10pm. Only emergency access will be permitted via the laneway on SH6A/Frankton Road.

Machinery noise during the night closures will include diggers, trucks, airvac equipment and asphalt trucks. Floodlights will be directed down to work areas, away from nearby residences as much as possible.

We appreciate this work is disruptive, and we thank people in advance for their patience.
