Night closures on SH1 & SH16 Central Auckland this week
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 2 Nov 2026 11:03am | Auckland
Road users should plan ahead for overnight closures on State Highway 1 (SH1) and State Highway 16 (SH16) in Central Auckland this week, starting tonight.
On Monday 2 and Tuesday 3 November, a full northbound closure will be in place on SH1 between Symonds Street and Fanshawe Street, from 10pm to 5am. There will also be lane closures from Fanshawe Street to the Shelly Beach Overbridge and the SH1 northbound to SH16 westbound link will also be closed.
- Motorists travelling on SH1 northbound will need to take the SH16 Port link eastbound and detour via Stanley Street, Beach Road, Customs Street East and Fanshawe Street.
- Motorists travelling on SH16 eastbound to SH1 northbound will need to take the Nelson Street off-ramp and detour via Nelson Street and Fanshawe Street.
- Motorists travelling from SH1 northbound to SH16 westbound will need to take the Symonds Street off-ramp and detour via Symonds Street and Newton Road.
On Thursday 5 November, a full westbound closure will be in place on SH16 from Stanley Street (Port) to Great North Road/Waterview Tunnel, from 10pm to 5am. Those travelling west will not be able to access Waterview Tunnel during the closure.
There is a detour via Stanley Street, Grafton Road, Khyber Pass Road, Newton Road, Ian McKinnon Drive, New North Road, Carrington Road and Great North Road.
We recommend using SH1 southbound to State Highway 20 (SH20) as an alternative route.
Allow extra time for your journey and follow signposted detours.
These works are required to keep the network safe and reliable for all road users.
Thank you in advance for your patience and support as we carry out this important maintenance work.
Works are weather dependent and may change.
