Road users may experience delays due to important road surfacing maintenance, scheduled to take place on State Highway 16 (SH16) between Te Atatu Road and Great North Road from this Sunday 20 September.

SH16 Eastbound Closure

A full eastbound closure will be in place from Te Atatu Road to Great North Road from Sunday 20 to Wednesday 23 September between 9pm and 5am. 

Please follow the signposted detour via Te Atatu Road, Great North Road, Rata Street, Ash Street and Great North Road, where road users will be able to re-enter SH16 for eastbound travel.  

For those wanting to connect with State Highway 20 (SH20), please note that the link between SH16 (eastbound) and SH20 (southbound) will also be closed, including the Great North Road off ramp. 

Please follow the signposted detour via Te Atatu Road, Great North Road, Rata Street, Ash Street, Rosebank Road, Blockhouse Bay Road, New Windsor Street and Maioro Street, where you can get on SH20 for southbound travel.

Contingency shifts for the eastbound works are scheduled for Thursday 24 and Sunday 27 September 2026. 

Once the eastbound works are completed, the team will move to the westbound direction. 

SH16 Westbound Closure

A full westbound closure will be in place from Great North Road to Te Atatu Road from Tuesday 29 September to Thursday 1 October between 10pm and 5am. 

Please follow the signposted detour via Great North Road, Ash Street, Rata Street, Great North Road and Te Atatu Road, where road users will be able to re-enter SH16 to continue westbound.

Waterview Tunnel

Parts of the Waterview Tunnel will also be closed, including the northbound entrance heading towards SH16 or the city.

Please follow detours or consider alternative travel recommendations below:

• SH16 - follow the signposted detour via Maioro Street, New Windsor Road, Tiverton Road, Wolverton Street, Clark Street and Great North Road where road users will be able to get onto SH16 at Te Atatu.
• City or State Highway 1 (SH1) – exit early at Dominion Road or follow the detour above to get on SH16 at the citybound Great North Road onramp.

For those travelling westbound on SH16, heading to SH20, please follow the signposted detour via Great North Road, Blockhouse Bay Road, Tiverton Road, New Windsor Road, Maioro Street, where you will be able to get on SH20 southbound.
