Night closures, traffic impacts for SH1 North Canterbury

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 23 Jan 2026 4:59pm | Canterbury

A series of night closures and other traffic management are scheduled for part of State Highway 1 through North Canterbury next month as a major road rebuild is due to be carried out.

The stretch of SH1/Omihi Road near Waipara, close to the Church Road intersection, will require night works from 1 to 4 February which means closure of the road from 10pm to 5am daily, with a detour available.

For southbound traffic, the detour is right onto Scargill Valley Road/Waikari Valley Road, left onto State Highway 7/Weka Pass Road, and back onto SH1. The reverse applies for northbound traffic. The detour may add an additional 30 minutes onto travel times.

From 2 to 27 February, work during the day from 6am to 6pm will mean road users being asked to stop on demand and a temporary speed reduction at the worksite. People should plan for delays of up to 20 minutes during the day.

We thank people in advance for their patience as this important work is carried out. Notification will be provided if the schedule for this work changes.
