2 October – Weather postpones start of Cumberland Street roadworks

Recent poor weather has caused a week’s delay to the start of the resurfacing work on Cumberland Street/State Highway 1 in central Dunedin.

The work and night-time closures on the stretch of southbound Cumberland Street/SH1 between the Gordon Street and Andersons Bay Road intersections are now due to start on Sunday 12 October. The end date for the work, Friday 17 October, is unchanged (details of closure timings and detours in the last update below).

The weather and low temperatures have halted current works on SH1 Crawford Street, which has led to the delay for the start of the Cumberland Street work, but the Crawford Street work is still expected to be completed within its original timeframe.

If weather conditions or other issues cause any other changes to timings, a further update will be provided.

30 September – Night-time closures for resurfacing work on Cumberland Street, Dunedin

Cumberland Street/State Highway 1 in central Dunedin will be subject to a series of night-time closures from next week as road resurfacing work takes place.

The stretch of southbound Cumberland Street/SH1 between the Gordon Street and Andersons Bay Road intersections will be affected (see map below). Parts of the road surface will be dug up and reinstated with new asphalt.

The closures will be in effect for up to 10 nights, closing at 7.30pm and reopening at 6am the following day, from Sunday to Thursday. The first closure is due to take place from 7.30pm on Sunday 5 October.

A detour will be available for light vehicles via Jervois St, Princes St, King Edward St, Hillside Rd, and Andersons Bay Rd. For heavy vehicles, it will be via the Jetty St overbridge, Wharf St, Strathallan St, Andersons Bay Rd. Those operating overweight and overdimension vehicles should refer to their permit.

Uneven surfaces, temporary speed restrictions and side road closures will be in place throughout the duration of the work. Parking within the work site is prohibited, except where temporary access has been provided.

Access to businesses will continue but sometimes driveway access may be restricted. The BP service station on Cumberland Street can be accessed as normal, but customers exiting the service station will be directed to Wolseley Street.

As much as we can, we will minimise the impact on adjacent residents and businesses, as well as the travelling public, however there will be some level of noise, in addition to the traffic disruption.

We thank people in advance for their patience as this necessary work is carried out.

Weather conditions and completion requirements may delay the start and duration of this work. If this happens, we will provide an update.
