UPDATE: 13 November – Work on SH1 Temuka to pause for three nights

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 13 Nov 2025 11:09am | Canterbury

Work to resurface part of State Highway 1/King Street through the South Canterbury town of Temuka will pause over the next three nights, meaning a break from stop/go traffic management and a side road closure.

A combination of forecast poor weather and Canterbury Anniversary Weekend means no work will take place tonight, Friday or Saturday nights, and adjoining Ewen Road at the SH1 intersection will be open. People are still asked to drive with care through the area.

Weather-permitting, work will resume on Sunday night for three more shifts of 8pm to 6am, when stop/go traffic management will be back in place on SH1/King Street and access from Ewen Road at the intersection will be closed again

5 November - Night work to impact traffic through Temuka

Resurfacing of part of State Highway 1/King Street through the South Canterbury town of Temuka will mean road users having to navigate a few nights of temporary traffic restrictions.

Weather-permitting, the work is due to take place from 8pm to 6am for up to five nights starting this Sunday, 9 November. During these periods, while contractors are milling and paving the highway, those travelling on SH1 will be asked to stop on demand and temporary speed restrictions will be in place.

Access to SH1/King Street from adjoining Ewen Road will be closed from 8pm to 6am for these periods of work (see map below).

Road users are asked to take care when travelling through the affected areas while the work is underway. If the weather conditions change the schedule of work, we will provide notice of this. Stay up to date on the latest at our Journey Planner site.
