Night works coming up on State Highway 1 - Cambridge
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 2 May 2025 11:54am | Waikato
Road users are advised to plan ahead for traffic delays and some detours just south of Cambridge, as night work commences for up to two weeks on State Highway 1 (SH1). There will be various work sites starting from the Lockley/Newcombe Road interchange, ending just south of Hickey Road.
Reseal work
From 8pm to 5am from Sunday night 4 May, crews will recommence resealing which started in late March and was delayed due to weather and paused to avoid works over public holidays (Easter and ANZAC).
Update: Upcoming works on Cambridge section of Waikato Expressway(external link)
We’ll be working on SH1 Waikato Expressway, Cambridge section between the southern end of the Expressway from the Tīrau Road interchange through to Hickey Road. Stop/go traffic management will be in place north and southbound during the night works.
The southbound onramp at the Tīrau Road interchange will be closed while we are working on the southbound lanes. The northbound offramp at the Tīrau Road interchange will be closed when we are working on the northbound lanes. Vehicles will be detoured via Victoria Road interchange.
This work is expected to take 5 nights, weather dependent. Temporary speed limits will be in place during the day.
Pavement pit works
Geotechnical investigations are coming up on SH1 for the Cambridge to Piarere Expressway project, which will also cause some delays overnight.
Work is expected to get underway during the week starting 12 May for 6 nights between 9pm and 6am, finishing on 17 May (weather dependent).
The geotechnical investigations are a critical part of the detailed design work for the SH1 Cambridge to Piarere Expressway project. This work allows us to better understand what’s below the surface to help us design and plan how to build the road. We do this by undertaking robust testing of the soil and rock at various sites across the construction area that looks at:
- ground conditions, including soil and rock types
- groundwater depths
- strength of soil and rock
- gathering soil and rock samples to assess.
These geotechnical investigations have been progressing for several months across different properties in Karāpiro, and we’re now at a stage where we need to look underneath the existing road.
This involves digging a 40cm x 40cm pit in the road so that our specialist equipment can investigate what is underneath and collect soil samples. Once one site is completed, the crew will patch up the road before moving to the next site.
As this work is being done in the middle of the road there will be temporary traffic management in place, which will cause a small delay. Here’s what is coming up:
State Highway 1:
- 5 sites between 333 and 425 Tīrau Road
- 12 sites between 504 and 608 Tīrau Road
- 2 sites between 946 and 977 Tīrau Road
Karāpiro Road:
- 4 sites between 21 and 70 Karāpiro Road
Hickey Road:
- 1 site between SH1 and 24 Hickey Road
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) will confirm the final details of the works next week.
