Night works planned for State Highway 1 next week – Tawa to Glenside
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 21 Nov 2025 1:37pm | Wellington
Wellington drivers need to be ready to adjust their travel plans with nightworks planned for State Highway 1 between Tawa to Glenside next week.
Contractors will be resurfacing the highway between the Tawa southbound off-ramp, and the Westchester Drive/Grenada Drive southbound on-ramp.
This is critical maintenance - road resurfacing helps prevent potholes and fixes pavement wear. It also improves road grip and skid resistance, making the highway safer for drivers.
Because of the work and machinery required, the highway will have to be closed to southbound traffic on Thursday night (27 November), between 9 pm and 4:30 am.
The closure will be between the Tawa southbound off-ramp and the Westchester Drive/Grenada Drive southbound on-ramp. A local road detour will be available for all traffic, including heavy vehicles, via Takapu Road, Middleton Road and Westchester Drive.
The work is scheduled at night, when traffic volumes are lower, to minimise delays for drivers. However, the detour will require additional travel time, so drivers heading into Wellington should allow extra time for their journey while this maintenance work is underway.
Drivers are asked to follow all detours and traffic management controls in place while this work is underway – it is there to keep the public and road workers safe.
