NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 14 May 2026 5:58pm | Wellington
Drivers travelling on State Highway 1 can expect to see ramp closures at Johnsonville and Newlands at night next week.
Wellington Transport Alliance crews will be carrying out a range of maintenance works and repairs at the Johnsonville northbound and southbound offramps, and the Newlands southbound offramp. This will see these ramps closed to all traffic.
Nightworks are planned Tuesday to Thursday nights (19–21 May) between 9 pm and 4:30 am.
Johnsonville northbound offramp
Here contractors will be working on traffic signal infrastructure and painting new line markings.
- Tuesday 19 May and Wednesday 20 May. 9 pm – 4:30 am:
- Johnsonville northbound offramp CLOSED.
- Drivers wanting to travel northbound to Johnsonville will need to instead travel north to the Grenada Interchange to turn around and travel south via the Grenada southbound onramp. Then use the Johnsonville southbound offramp to get to Johnsonville.

Newlands southbound onramp closure
Work crews will be conducting pavement testing. This is done to check wear and tear on the road surface and is critical for maintenance planning.
- Wednesday 20 May, and Thursday 21 May. 9 pm – 4:30 am:
- Newlands southbound onramp CLOSED.
- Drivers wanting to travel southbound from Newlands will need to instead travel north using the Newlands northbound onramp. Travel to Grenada Interchange to turn around and travel south via the Grenada southbound onramp.
Johnsonville southbound offramp
Work crews will be replacing streetlight poles.
- Thursday 21 May. 9 pm – 4:30 am:
- Johnsonville southbound offramp CLOSED.
- Southbound traffic will have to detour by continuing south, turning around at Ngauranga, then travelling north and using the northbound Johnsonville offramp.

Driver advice
This maintenance will be done at night, when traffic volumes are lower, to minimise disruption to traffic.
However, the work involved means the ramps must be closed while it is being completed. Drivers will have to use alternative routes and should allow extra time for their journeys.
Road users must observe and follow all traffic management in place. Because of the work involved and the equipment being used, the ramps must be closed to traffic. This is to ensure the public and roadworkers are kept safe.
