Northland – Mangamuka and Whakapara re-opening

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 27 Mar 2026 4:05pm | Northland

It’s been a busy but successful day for Northland roading crews after widespread flooding isolated the Far North and Kaitaia overnight.

SH1 Mangamuka Gorge opened just before 3pm this afternoon following clearance of a slip.

Temporary repairs have taken longer than anticipated at Whakapara Bridge on SH1, but the road will re-open at 4.30pm following removal of the old road surface over the bridge and new asphalting. Road users should slow down and be advised there are temporary ramps on either side of the bridge and a temporary speed limit of 30m/h until a full fix can be undertaken.

There are still some areas of flooding on the network and drivers should still drive with care, mindful that even where flood water has receded, road surfaces will be slippery and may be damaged.

Updated road conditions

SH1 Whakapara - OPEN at 4.30
Reduced speed in place.

SH1 Mangamuka Gorge - OPEN

SH10 Kaeo – OPEN
Surface water. Drive with caution.

SH15 Between Titoki and Parakao – CLOSED
Flood water is likely to remain here into the weekend.
