Flooding on both sides of Coromandel – not high tide yet

Flooding is isolating multiple townships in the Coromandel, with rain continuing to fall and high tide still ahead.

Flooding is now affecting State Highway 25 (SH25) on both sides of the peninsula, at Hikuai, 12 kilometres south of Tairua and at Manaia on the Thames coast side. There is no safe state highway access to towns such as Tairua, Whitianga and Coromandel township.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) advises road users not to drive into flooded areas. While the road is currently passable for 4 wheel drive vehicles, the flooding will worsen as the evening progresses, with high tide at 11.30pm. Both sides of SH25 are expected to fully close in the next couple of hours.

There are also reports of surface flooding on State Highway 2 at Waikino in the Karangahake Gorge. Road users should exercise caution.
