On-ramp nightworks planned in September for State Highway 59 Titahi Bay/Porirua

Drivers needing to access State Highway 59 from Porirua and Titahi Bay will need to be ready to use an alternative route next month.

Night works are planned between 9 pm and 4:30 am from Sunday, 7 September to Thursday, 11 September for a rebuild of the road on the highway’s northbound on-ramp.

Because a rebuild requires heavy machinery and the road has to be excavated, it is unsafe for drivers to use the on-ramp while the work is being completed.

This means it will be closed to all traffic while the night works are underway. However, it will be open, under a temporary speed limit, outside of work hours.

It is essential drivers obey the temporary speed limit. Lower speeds protect the road from damage during construction and also reduce the risk of damage to vehicles.

A detour will be in place via Parumoana Street, Lyttelton Avenue, Walton Leigh Avenue, Titahi Bay Road, and the Mungavin Avenue interchange. This will require extra travel time, and drivers should allow extra time for their journeys.

The work is timed to happen at night when traffic volumes are lower. This reduces overall disruption and delays for drivers as carrying out these works during the day would have a much greater impact on traffic flows.

Contractors will be carrying out initial site investigations and pre-work testing over the next few weeks ahead of the closures. This provides valuable information about the road and its sub-surface and allows contractors to determine what is specifically needed to make the road rebuild effective and durable.

NZTA/Waka Kotahi understands road works do create delays and frustration for road users, but regular state highway maintenance is essential for ensuring roads and infrastructure remain safe and reliable for the public.
