Overnight closure ahead for HB Expressway
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 20 Mar 2026 9:28am | Hawke’s Bay
A stretch of State Highway 2 Hawke’s Bay Expressway will be closed overnight next Wednesday (25 March) for road surface testing.
The road will be closed between the Pākōwhai/Links Road and Evenden Road roundabouts from 8pm until 5am.
The closure will allow road surface testing to be carried out and the road testing vehicle to stop at multiple locations between the closure points.
The testing involves specialised equipment that measures how the road surface performs under different loads. The data we collect gives us information to help inform future roading decisions.
A detour, suitable for HPMV, will be in place. This is expected to add another 5-10 minutes to journey times.
Road users will be detoured onto Pākōwhai Road and Evenden Road and then back onto the expressway.
Access through the closure will remain for emergency services and over-dimensional vehicles.
Please plan ahead and allow additional time if you're travelling overnight. Signage will be in place to detour traffic.
Weather conditions may impact our timing. Thursday 26 March is the contingency date.
