A stretch of State Highway 57 in Horowhenua will be closing overnight from mid next month for four weeks as crews working on the Ōtaki to north of Levin expressway finish constructing a temporary road.
Upcoming closure
From Sunday 15 November: SH57 will close between Queen Street East in Levin and Heatherlea East Road. This section of road will close 6pm to 6am Sunday to Thursday nights.
Detours will be available at all times – for light and heavy vehicles.
- Light vehicles will use various local road detours via Queen Street East, Tavistock Road and Heatherlea East Road.
- Heavy vehicles travelling northbound will be directed to stay on SH1 at Kimberley Road.
- Heavy vehicles travelling southbound on SH57 at Shannon will be directed to SH1 via Foxton Shannon Road.
The work is expected to take up to 4 weeks to complete and crews may use Friday nights if there’s been bad weather during the week.
During the work, crews will be completing the north and south sections of a new 800 metre temporary detour road to the west of the existing highway.
Once opened, the temporary road will then allow crews to construct the southern most roundabout of the new Ōtaki to north of Levin expressway.
Resident access will be maintained at all times during the nightly closures, and emergency services will always have right of way.
During the daytime a temporary speed limit will be in place.
We expect to be able to move traffic onto the new road in December – at which time, there will be a new road layout to take care around.
