Overnight essential bridge maintenance ahead for two CHB bridges
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 28 Sept 2026 6:07pm | Hawke’s Bay
Two stretches of state highway in Central Hawke’s Bay will be closing on two separate nights next month for essential bridge maintenance.
This is in addition to next month’s work at the Esk River Bridge and Esk Rail Overbridge.
Overnight closure on SH2 just north of Napier–Taupō Road turnoff
Upcoming closures
Sunday 11 October from 8pm till 4am: State Highway 2 will be closed just north of the Napier–Taupō Road turnoff for work at Esk River Bridge and Esk Rail Overbridge. Contingency date in case of wet weather: 18 October.
Monday 12 October from 8pm till 4am: State Highway 50 will be closed between Kereru Road, Maraekākaho and Tikokino Road for work at the Ben Lomond Bridge. Contingency date in case of wet weather: 13 October.
Tuesday 13 October from 9pm till 5am: State Highway 2 will be closed between Ongaonga Road, Waipawa and the turnoff with SH50 in Takapau for work on Waipukurau Bridge. Contingency date in case of delays or wet weather: 20 October.
Detours will be available for the Central Hawke’s Bay bridge work, but not for the Esk River Bridge work. (See maps below for details).
During the closures, crews will be renewing the road surface of the approaches at either end of the bridges.
Full closures are needed because the road and bridges aren't wide enough to safely accommodate both traffic and the work at the same time.
The work relies on dry weather. Please refer to the contingency dates above.
Please expect delays; plan your overnight trips accordingly and travel to conditions.
Once complete, the renewed approaches will help provide a safer, more reliable journey for people travelling across the bridges.
