Auckland road users should be aware that there is essential maintenance work coming up that will involve nighttime closures and detours.

The work is being carried out at the following locations:

SH1 Ellerslie interchange to Symonds Street

There will be a full northbound closure on Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 November between 10pm and 5am. Please use the recommended detour:  

• Motorists travelling from Ellerslie to Symonds Street: Please use the recommended detour via Great South Road, Broadway, Khyber Pass Road and Grafton Road to SH16 Wellesley Street westbound on-ramp where you can access SH1 northbound.
• Motorists travelling to State Highway 16 westbound: Please use the recommended detour via Great South Road, Greenlane West, Balmoral Road and St Lukes Road.

SH16 Great North Road, Waterview to Alten Road (CMJ), includes Waterview Tunnel

There will be a full eastbound closure on Thursday 13 November between 10pm and 5am. SH20 northbound from Maioro Street to SH16 links (which includes Waterview Tunnel) will also be part of this closure. 

• Motorists travelling to Alten Road please use recommended detour via Great North Road, Newton Road, Khyber Pass Road, Grafton Road, Symonds Street and Alten Road.
• Motorists travelling to SH1 northbound please use recommended detour via Great North Road, Newton Road, Ponsonby Road, Hopetoun Street, Pitt Street, Union Street and Wellington Street to the Wellington Street northbound on-ramp.
• Motorists travelling from SH1 southbound to Port please use exit at SH16 Newton Road and use the recommended detour via Great North Road, Newton Road, Khyber Pass Road, Grafton Road, Symonds Street, Anzac Ave and Beach Road.
• Motorists travelling from SH20 to SH16 westbound please use the recommended detour via Maioro Street, Tiverton Road, Blockhouse Bay Road, Great North Road (left turn) and Rosebank Road.
• Motorists travelling from SH20 to SH16 eastbound please use the recommended detour via Blockhouse Bay Road, Great North Road (turn right) to Great North Road westbound on-ramp.

SH16 Great North Road, Waterview to Lincoln Road

There will be a full northbound closure on Wednesday 12 November between 10pm and 5am.  SH20 northbound from Maioro Street to SH16 links (which includes Waterview Tunnel) will be part of this closure.   

• Motorists travelling from SH16 Waterview to Lincoln Road: Please use the recommended detour via Great North Road, Blockhouse Bay Road, St Judes St, Great North Road and Lincoln Road.
• Motorists travelling from SH20 to SH16 (westbound): Please use the recommended detour via Maioro Street, Tiverton Road, Blockhouse Bay Road, Great North Road (left turn) and follow the signposted detour to Lincoln Road.
• Motorists travelling from SH20 to SH16 (eastbound): Please use the recommended detour via Maioro Street, Tiverton Road, Blockhouse Bay Road, Great North Road (right turn) to St Lukes eastbound on-ramp.

SH20 Massey Road to Rimu Road (includes SH20A Kirkbride Rd to Airport links)

There will be a full northbound closure overnight on Sunday 9 and Monday 10 November between 10pm and 5am. Stop/go traffic management will be in place at Coronation Road roundabout.

• Motorists travelling northbound on SH20: detour via Massey Road, Robertson Road, Walmsley Road, Mahunga Drive and Rimu Road.
• Motorists travelling from SH20A: detour via Kirkbride Road, McKenzie Road, Coronation Road and Rimu Road. State highway maintenance is an essential part of delivering safe and reliable journeys. We appreciate that time may be added to your journey and ask that you plan ahead.
