Overnight stop/go part of next HB Expressway project phase
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 3 Dec 2025 3:54pm | Hawke’s Bay
A stretch of State Highway 2 Hawke’s Bay Expressway will be under stop/go traffic management with traffic lights, from Sunday night (7 December) as project work progresses.
The road, just south of Tutaekuri River Bridge through to the Links Road/Pākōwhai Road roundabout, will be under stop/go from 8pm to 5am from Sunday to Friday 19 December.
The work will take place Sunday to Thursday each week, with crews finishing the stop/go at 5am Friday 19 December. Crews will not be working Friday and Saturday nights.
During the overnight work, crews will be preparing for the next phase of construction of the Road of National Significance project which will see the most congested section of the expressway 4-laned.
Crews will be removing flexible median barrier to shift traffic and create space for the construction of new lanes. During the work, excavators will be on site to dig out the flexible median barrier.
We’re doing this work at night when traffic volumes are lower to minimise disruption.
Crews will then return from 6-8 January 2026 to complete the temporary steel barrier installation along the northbound lane. This work will be done using the same Stop/Go, and we will share more details closer to the time.
Please plan your journey accordingly and expect 5-10 minute delays.
