Overnight work on SH50, Ahuriri as Commercial Safety Vehicle Centre work progresses
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 8 Dec 2025 3:36pm | Hawke’s Bay
Crews working on Napier’s new Commercial Safety Vehicle Centre (CVSC) will be working overnight on State Highway 50 in Ahuriri this week.
The work takes place at the intersection of SH50 Bridge Street and Ossian Street for the next 5 nights, between 8pm and 5am.
During the overnight work, crews will be preparing SH50 for the installation of in-road scales and an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera next year.
The in-road scales will be installed as part of the CVSC at various locations on the approach to the CVSC – including on the expressway at Westshore; SH50 on the Ahuriri truck bypass; SH51 Georges Drive at Marewa and the expressway at Greenmeadows.
If a heavy vehicle is flagged during screening, digital signage near the scales will instruct the driver to pull into the centre by showing the vehicle’s licence plate number.
As part of the week of work, tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday nights, access from SH50 into Ossian Street will be closed while we complete resurfacing of SH50 around the intersection.
Detours will be clearly signposted to guide traffic through alternative routes. Southbound and northbound traffic will be directed down Lever Street on to Domett Street.
There will be full access for road users through the SH50/Ossian Street intersection during the day from 5am to 8pm, each day.
The works involve rebuilding a 100m section of the southbound lane with asphalt. This is necessary to prepare the road for the future in-road scales.
What’s next
From Friday (12 December), crews will also be working at State Highway 51 Georges Drive to prepare for in-road scales there too.
Stop/go traffic management will be in place.
