Part of State Highway 74, Norwich and Gladstone Quays, at Lyttelton is due to close from this Thursday (23 July) to allow for a few weeks’ worth of work upgrading the main gate at the port.

Contractors for Lyttelton Port Company will be upgrading the main gate to the port on Gladstone Quay, including realignment and replacement of the rail track, railway level crossing and associated services both below ground and in alignment with the railway. KiwiRail will also be completing work on the railway line during the same construction period.

The closure of SH74 at the intersection with Oxford Street is due to begin at 6am on Thursday, and to run daily through until approximately Friday 4 September 2026, depending on factors such as weather. Port access will be via Sutton Quay for authorised vehicles only and Fisherman’s Wharf car park will be closed.

The following temporary traffic impacts will also be in place during construction:

• The right lane from Norwich Quay into the roundabout will be closed, with all traffic using a single lane. This is to allow for truck queuing to access the port via Sutton Quay without causing congestion.
• No right turn out of Dublin Street onto Norwich Quay, nor from Norwich Quay onto Dublin Street. People should use alternative routes such as via London Street and Canterbury Street.
• Oxford Street overbridge will be exit only, with no vehicle access into the port via Oxford Street.

The parking area at the corner of Donald Street and Gladstone Quay will remain accessible. To enable the temporary closure of the Gladstone Quay port access, there will also be temporary changes to pedestrian crossings at Norwich Quay and Oxford Street, and two bus stops will also be temporarily relocated.
