Paving works and night closure next week for State Highway 58 Paremata/Whitby

Investment in Wellington’s state highways continues with new road surface to be laid on State Highway 58 / Paremata Road next week.
Road crews will be on the job on Wednesday night (14 October), between 9pm and 4:30am.
They will be milling and repaving the highway west of Ivey Bay, between Postgate Drive and the State Highway 58/59 roundabout at Paremata.
Because of limited highway space, and because heavy equipment is needed to mill and pave the road, a full road closure will be required.
For safety reasons, the route cannot be open to traffic while the work is being completed. Access will be retained for residents and emergency services. Residents will continue to have access to their properties but may experience short delays while contractors manage access through the work site
A local road detour will be available for all other traffic (see map below). It is longer and will require extra travel time.
The work is deliberately timed to be done at night when traffic volumes are lower. This reduces overall disruption to drivers. The full closure also allows road crews to complete the work much faster.
The new asphalt road surface will improve its skid resistance and grip, making it safer for road users. Asphalt is stronger than chipseal and it is also quieter, reducing road noise for nearby residents.
This section of State Highway 58 carries almost 14,000 vehicles daily and is a critical connection for Whitby and Paremata residents. The planned works are critical maintenance for an important transport route.
