Essential maintenance work is coming up pre-Christmas on State Highway 1 (SH1) and State Highway 16 (SH16), which will have a noticeable impact on night-time journeys and involve detours. Please plan ahead and check the NZTA Journey Planner before you travel.

SH16 Great North Road, Waterview to Lincoln Road

There will be a full closure of northbound lanes on SH16 between Great North Road, Waterview and Lincoln Road overnight Monday 8 December (10pm - 5am).

State Highway 20 (SH20) will also be closed northbound from Maioro Street to SH16 links (which includes Waterview Tunnel).

Detours as follows:

• Traffic travelling from SH16 Waterview to Lincoln Road: Please use the recommended detour via Great North Road, Blockhouse Bay Road, St Judes St, Great North Road and Lincoln Road.
• Traffic travelling from SH20 to SH16 (westbound): Please use the recommended detour via Maioro Street, Tiverton Road, Blockhouse Bay Road, Great North Road (left turn) and follow the signposted detour to Lincoln Road.
• Traffic travelling from SH20 to SH16 (eastbound): Please use the recommended detour via Maioro Street, Tiverton Road, Blockhouse Bay Road, Great North Road (right turn) to Great North Road eastbound on-ramp.

SH1 Silverdale to Orewa (northbound)

There will be a full northbound closure of SH1 between Silverdale and Orewa along with southbound lane restrictions in place for two nights between 9pm and 5am on both Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 December to repair damaged wire ropes caused by an incident.

A full nighttime southbound closure along with northbound lane restrictions may also be required between Orewa and Silverdale interchange on Thursday 18 December (contingency shift) between 9pm and 5am.

Motorists should use the recommended detour via Twin Discovery Coast Highway to Orewa interchange.

Heavy vehicles may need to travel to Warkworth on old SH1 if they do not meet the weight restrictions at Grand Drive, Orewa.

SH1 between Silverdale and Warkworth

There are multiple nighttime closures scheduled on SH1 between Silverdale and Warkworth on Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 December:

• Johnstones Hill Tunnels: There will be a full northbound closure overnight Monday 15 December between 9pm and 5am. Traffic will still be able to travel north using one of the southbound lanes.
• Silverdale interchange to Warkworth: There will be a full northbound closure overnight Monday 15 December between 9pm and 5am. Please use the recommended detour via Hibiscus Coast and Old State Highway 1.
• Johnstones Hill Tunnels: There will be a full southbound closure on Tuesday 16 December between 9pm and 5am. Traffic will still be able to travel south using one of the northbound lanes.
• Warkworth to Silverdale interchange: There will be a full southbound closure along with northbound lane restrictions on Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 December between 9pm and 5am. Please use the recommended detour via Old State Highway 1 and Hibiscus Coast Highway.
