REMINDER: Maintenance and resurfacing work coming for Manawatū Bridge (Whirokino)

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 17 Mar 2026 12:04pm | Manawatū-Whanganui

A reminder that road resurfacing work is planned for Manawatū Bridge (Whirokino) on State Highway 1 from this Sunday night.

This work was originally planned to take place last month but was rescheduled due to the February storm event. Repairs to sections of the flexible median barrier were completed last week.

From Sunday 22 March, the southbound lane of the bridge will be closed for 3 shifts.

Work will be carried out under a mixture of night and day shifts:

  • Nighttime southbound closure on Sunday 22 March from 7pm until 5am
  • Daytime southbound closure on Monday 23 March from 9am until 2:30pm
  • Nighttime southbound closure on Wednesday 8 April from 7pm until 5am
  • Southbound traffic will be detoured. At all times during the work, the northbound lane will remain open, with a temporary lower speed in place.

During the southbound lane closure, resurfacing and road marking works will be carried out.

Southbound traffic will be detoured onto Foxton Shannon Road to State Highway 57, Shannon to Queen Street East, and back to State Highway 1 in Levin.

The detour route is expected to add an additional 10 to 15 minutes to your journey time.

We thank you for your patience during these works.
