Reminder: Night closures next week for State Highway 58 – Haywards to Pāuatahanui

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 28 Oct 2026 8:06am | Wellington

A full week of night closures is coming up for State Highway 58, beginning this Sunday night.

The route will be closed to traffic in both directions from the Haywards Interchange to Transmission Gully for five nights, starting Sunday, 1 November.

The closures will be in place Sunday to Thursday nights between 9pm and 4am.

Contractors will complete a range of maintenance work during the closures.

This includes repairing road safety barriers, carrying out road repairs, and clearing drains and channels. Safety barrier repairs are critical because the barriers are essential safety infrastructure and play a major role in reducing deaths and serious injuries when crashes occur.

Night closures are being used because they are the most effective way to carry out the work while minimising disruption to the public.

Road crews can complete more work, more quickly, and operate in a much safer environment without nearby traffic. The approach also reduces traffic management costs.

With around 20,000 vehicles using the highway daily, scheduled maintenance like this is critical to keeping the highway safe and reliable for road users.

Travel advice

Traffic travelling between the Hutt Valley and Whitby/Porirua will have to detour via State Highway 2 and State Highway 1 during the closure (see map below).

This is a longer route and will need extra travel time. Drivers must plan accordingly.

The closure will not apply to residents and businesses in the closure area. Access for residents, businesses and emergency services will be maintained. Contractors will provide escorts.
