Update: State Highway 58 – Second planned night closure this Sunday
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 2 Oct 2025 11:35am | Wellington
Update: 2 October
Forecast bad weather means the planned night closure for State Highway 58 between the State Highway 2 Haywards interchange and the State Highway 1 (Transmission Gully) Pāuatahanui interchange will not proceed as planned.
Instead, the work will be done on the next planned night closure date of Sunday, 9 November. Sunday, 16 November will be the contingency date if further delays occur.
It means the highway will be OPEN to all traffic this coming Sunday night.
29 September
The trial of scheduled nighttime maintenance closures continues on State Highway 58 with the next planned closure scheduled for this weekend
The highway will be closed on Sunday, 5 October, between 10 pm and 4 am. State Highway 58 will be closed between the State Highway 2 Haywards interchange and the State Highway 1 (Transmission Gully) Pāuatahanui interchange.
Contractors will be repairing barriers, removing litter, clearing drainage channels, vegetation removal and replacing edges marker posts.
Trial approach and benefits
This is the second of three planned closures before the end of this year. The Wellington Transport Alliance is testing a new approach for maintenance for the highway to reduce the impact of roadworks on residents and road users.
Similar to the method used on State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill, closures are done at night, coinciding with lower traffic volumes, which minimises disruption and delays. Full closures also allow maintenance work to be completed faster, reduce traffic management costs, and are far less disruptive than daytime road works under stop/go traffic management.
They are also regularly scheduled. This means people know exactly when they will happen well in advance and can plan for them.
Advice for drivers and residents
Escorted access will be available for affected businesses and residents within the closure area, and emergency services will have access through State Highway 58 at all times.
There will be no nightly escorts for other road users travelling between the Hutt Valley and Pāuatahanui.
Westbound traffic will have to detour via State Highway 2 to Ngauranga and then use State Highway 1. Eastbound traffic will have to use State Highway 1, then State Highway 2.
This is a longer trip, and people will need to allow for extra travel time while the closure is in place.
