State Highway 6 Mahers Road rebuild, and intersection improvements to begin next month
A road rebuild and intersection safety improvements are coming in early February for a section of State Highway 6 north of Renwick.
Contractors will rebuild about 500 metres of the highway north of the Mahers Road intersection, beginning Monday, 16 February, and continuing until Friday, 20 March.
Contractors will establish on-site from Monday, 9 February, but substantive works, and associated traffic management, will be in place from Monday, 16 February.
Work will be underway Monday to Friday, between 7 am and 6 pm. There will be no work on weekends.
Contractors will remove the top layer of the road, improve the road’s base, then lay new gravel and apply new chipseal.
While this is done, work crews will also widen the southbound shoulder approaching the Mahers Road intersection. This will increase the visibility of oncoming traffic for northbound vehicles turning right into Mahers Road from the highway.
The result will be an improved, more durable and safer section of State Highway 6.
This stretch of road carries, on average, more than 4,000 vehicles every day, about a quarter of them heavy vehicles. The Mahers Road intersection also provides access to and from the local Kaituna Sawmill.
The highway will remain open while the work is underway but will be under stop/go traffic management during work hours. To ensure the safety of drivers and road crews, a 30 km/h temporary speed limit will apply 24/7 until the project is completed.
Drivers can expect delays of up to 10 minutes when travelling through the roadworks site. Travellers, particularly those with Picton ferry connections, should factor this into their travel plans.
Drivers should follow all traffic management and speed limits in place. They are there to keep road crews and drivers safe. They also help prevent damage to the road’s surface and to vehicles.
These works are weather-dependent, and schedules may change if bad weather occurs. Road rebuilds and resurfacing require warm, dry conditions to be effective.
