REMINDER: Targeted summer maintenance programme starts this Sunday - State Highway 1 Transmission Gully / Te Aranui o Te Rangihaeata

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 4 Nov 2026 2:46pm | Wellington

Regular users of State Highway 1 Transmission Gully/Te Aranui o Te Rangihaeata are asked to be ready for roadworks on the route.

Road crews begin drainage improvements on the motorway from this Sunday (8 November) and will be working on the highway’s southbound lanes between Paekākāriki and the State Highway 58 Interchange.

A southbound lane closure will be in place from approximately 5pm on Sunday evening. Drivers can expect to see two separate work sites, where a 30 km/h speed limit will be in place.

A 70 km/h speed limit will apply between the two work sites.

Drivers can expect traffic delays at busy times, especially during morning peak periods and on weekends.

Road users are encouraged to consider using State Highway 59 as an alternative route at busy times.

Kāpiti to Hutt Valley travel advice

During peak traffic periods, people travelling between Kāpiti and the Hutt Valley should stay on State Highway 1 to get to State Highway 58.

This is due to daytime stop/go works on State Highway 58 between Paremata and Whitby. These will be underway from Monday, 9 November to Friday, 13 November between 7 am and 6 pm.

Congestion and delays on Transmission Gully can be expected until mid-December while the drainage works are underway.

The aim is to have them finished by 18 December, and the motorway operating as normal before the busy Christmas and New Year holiday period.

Work schedule

  • From 5pm Sunday 8 November until mid-December (24/7)
    • Southbound lane closure and 30km/h temporary speed limit
    • Consider using SH59 as an alternative route Monday to Friday between 6am – 8am and on weekends.

Pavement works planned

Additional pavement reconstruction work is planned in the New Year from 12 January. This will affect the motorway’s southbound lanes between Paekākāriki and the State Highway 58 interchange. Weather permitting, the work should be completed in March, before the Easter holidays.

The programme is deliberately focused on sections of the motorway that require repairs. The intention is to fix these areas now to prevent bigger problems and more disruption for road users in the future.

Approximately 5.5 kilometres of pavement reconstruction is planned this season. There will be no chipseal programme on Transmission Gully this summer.
