Reminder to plan ahead for upcoming Coromandel road closures

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is reminding people to plan ahead for upcoming road closures and detours in the Coromandel, affecting State Highway 25 and State Highway 25A in the coming weeks.

SH25 Boundary Creek Bridge (Thames Coast)

  • Closed for 7 days from 5am, Wednesday 29 October.

Contractors are strengthening and repairing the bridge supports. During the closure, the old bridge deck will be demolished and a new one installed.

The bridge has been reduced to a single lane since 2023 due to deterioration. Once the new deck is in place, the road will reopen to single lane traffic while finishing works are completed. By December, 2 lane access and the passing bay will be restored.

SH25A Kōpū-Hikuai

  • Daytime closures (8am – 5pm) for 2 weeks from Monday 10 November.

Daytime closures are required between 8am and 5pm Monday to Saturday. The road will open to traffic under single lane and stop/go each evening from 5pm and on Sunday 16 November. If you're on SH25A before 8am, you’ll be able to get through the work zone. Delays can be expected with only a single lane open.

Critical services such as first responders and school buses will be escorted through the site during the day. All other vehicles will be required to take the SH25 detour which adds an hour to the travel time.

The SH25A work will follow the 7-day closure on SH25 at Boundary Creek bridge on the Thames coast, which starts after Labour Day weekend.

It’s important to note that the Boundary Creek project, while taking 6 to 8 weeks to complete, will only be closed for 7 days. The bridge will remain open during the remaining work in a single lane (which has been the case since 2023 when the restrictions were put in place). These two closures will not overlap.

For residents, businesses and visitors a functional state highway network in and around the district is vital for daily life. It is important this work is carried out to ensure a resilient network that continues to provide those all-important connections.

We thank people for their patience and cooperation as these essential upgrades are carried out to improve safety and reliability for all road users. Please plan your journeys accordingly and stay updated via the NZTA Journey Planner.
