Repairs begin underneath Tutaekuri Bridge (Waitangi) SH51

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 4 Aug 2025 12:47pm | Hawke’s Bay

Work has now begun on the repair of Tutaekuri Bridge (Waitangi) over the Tutaekuri River.

The bridge, just south of Awatoto, has been closely monitored since Cyclone Gabrielle, and remains structurally sound.

The construction will be completed in three phases over approximately 5 months. The work will include removing debris from the river banks; repairing concrete piles on 7 bridge piers in the river and replacing 14 damaged bracing beams under the cycle path.

Crews will be onsite between 7am and 6pm.

Road users may have started to notice a few more worksite signs and vehicles parked off to the side of the bridge, but because most of this work will take place under the bridge, people won’t see too much activity over the coming months.

There will be the occasional stop/go traffic management when larger vehicle deliveries need to take place. This will be outside of peak times.

Traffic queues will be closely monitored and managed to keep people moving while we deliver these repairs.

The cycle path will remain accessible during the repair work. At times, a stop/go person will guide cycle and pedestrian traffic through the affected section if required. Expect some vibration and noise while cycling at times.

Please keep to the temporary speed limit so our crews and people driving can stay safe.

The Transport Rebuild East Coast (TREC) alliance is carrying out the work, on behalf of NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.
