Resurfacing nightworks continue for State Highway 1 Ngauranga Gorge and Interchange

Resurfacing work on one of Wellington’s busiest motorway interchanges continues next week, and drivers are urged to be prepared for its impact on traffic.
Nightworks are planned from Sunday night (11 January) through to Thursday night (15 January). Work will be underway each night between 9pm and 4:30am.
Planned works
Road crews will be working on the State Highway 1 northbound onramp from Hutt Road. They will be milling and removing the old asphalt road surface and replacing it with new asphalt. This will significantly improve the grip and skid resistance of the motorway’s road surface, making it safer for traffic.
The new asphalt will also make the road surface more durable, reducing the need for future maintenance. To minimise disruption and delays, the resurfacing is being done at night when fewer vehicles are on the road.
Because of the work involved and the heavy machinery required, the onramp will have to be closed to all traffic from Hutt Road. Northbound drivers wanting to enter State Highway 1 from Hutt Road will need to U-turn, travel south on Hutt Road, and access the highway via the Aotea Quay roundabout instead (see detour map below).
As this detour requires extra travel time, drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow more time for their journeys.
Works schedule and detour route
- Sunday 11 January to Thursday 15 January. 9pm – 4:30am
- SH1 northbound on-ramp from Hutt Road CLOSED
- Hutt Road traffic wanting to enter SH1 will need to U-turn, travel south on Hutt Road and enter SH1 via the Aotea Quay roundabout

Upcoming work
Looking ahead, resurfacing work is planned for the week of 19 January for the southbound lanes of State Highway 1 Ngauranga Gorge, and for the State Highway 1 southbound offramp (access to Hutt Road and State Highway 2).
Further information about these works and their schedules will be provided next week.
All planned works are weather-dependent and schedules may change. Drivers are encouraged to check road conditions before they travel.
