Resurfacing works on the way – State Highway 2 onramp, Ngauranga interchange
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 20 Mar 2026 3:32pm | Wellington
Work to improve and repair the road surface at the Ngauranga interchange will be continuing next week.
Contractors will be doing one night of resurfacing work on Thursday night (26 March), between 9 pm and 4 am.
They will be working on the onramp, laying a new road surface to replace the current pavement which is at the end of its life.
The new road surface will improve skid resistance, giving vehicles more road grip, and making the highway safer for the public. It also helps protect against potholes ahead of upcoming wetter winter weather.
The work will require the onramp from the Centennial Highway onto State Highway 2 (northbound to Petone) to be closed. Because of the work required and the heavy machinery used, vehicles cannot travel through the work site while resurfacing is underway.
Drivers on State Highway 1 wanting to head north to Lower Hutt will have to stay on State Highway 1, take the Aotea Quay offramp, then turn at the Aotea Quay roundabout and rejoin the highway on the Aotea Quay onramp.
This is a longer detour, requiring extra travel time. Drivers must plan for it and allow extra time for their journeys.
This work is weather-dependent, and schedules may change if bad weather occurs. Drivers are encouraged to check road conditions before they travel
Works Schedule and detour map:
