With the state highway summer maintenance season getting into top gear, resurfacing works are coming up for State Highway 63 at Saint Arnaud.

Contractors will be chipsealing sections of the highway both east and west of Saint Arnaud village from mid-October to mid-November. Almost ten kilometres of the highway will be resurfaced.

Weather permitting, contractors will be working weekdays (7 am to 5 pm) from Friday, 16 October to Tuesday, 17 November.

No road closures or detours are planned but stop/go traffic management and 30 km/h temporary speed limits will be in place at work sites during and outside of work hours.

Drivers can expect delays of approximately 10 minutes and should allow extra time when travelling on State Highway 63 between Marlborough and Kawatiri Junction.

The resurfacing will be done in sections. This helps reduce the project’s impact on residents and businesses. These sections include:

  • 1.2 km between Kehu Lane and Borlase Avenue to the east of Saint Arnaud village
  • 8.5 km from Kerr Bay Road to the Upper Buller Bridge to the west of Saint Arnaud village

Drivers are asked to observe all reduced speed limits and traffic management in place. They are there to keep the public and road crews safe.

Road users should also observe speed limits when work sites are unattended. Speeding on new seal is not safe. It can also damage the new road surface and increase the risk of stone chip damage to vehicles.

These works are weather-dependent, and schedules may change at short notice. Drivers are encouraged to check road conditions before they travel.

Work schedule

  • Friday 16 October to Tuesday 17 November. Monday to Friday, 7am – 5pm
    • Stop/go traffic management and 30 km/h temporary speed limit
    • The 30 km/h temporary speed limit applies at work sites outside of work hours
    • 10-minute delays expected.
