Wellington’s main route to the airport and Miramar will be getting improvements at the end of the month.

A road rebuild is planned for the city-bound lanes of State Highway 1 Cobham Drive between Calabar Road and Troy Street.

Night works are planned for Sunday to Thursday nights (23 to 27 August) between 8 pm and 4:30 am.

The good news for drivers is that the rebuild will be done using night-time lane closures only. There will be no full or directional closure of the route.

However, drivers travelling from Miramar to Wellington at night should expect short delays while these works are underway. The airport bound lanes will remain fully open.

This section of State Highway 1 carries around 15,000 vehicles daily. Because it is a well-used route and a critical transport connection, regular maintenance and upkeep of the road surface is essential.

The rebuild will improve the pavement’s skid resistance and grip, making the road safer and smoother to drive on.

There will be a 30 km/h temporary speed limit in place during the night works, and also a 50 km/h temporary speed limit in place during the day.

Drivers are urged to respect this speed limit and all traffic management in place. It is there to keep the public and road crews safe.
