Roadworks on Matatā straights this Thursday – expect delays

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 7 Oct 2025 5:10pm | Bay of Plenty

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) advises crews will be returning to State Highway 2 (SH2) Matatā, near Mimiha Road, to complete chipsealing roadworks this Thursday 9 October.

From 7am crews will start setting up and plan to be finished by 6pm.

While this work is underway, and for people’s safety, stop/go traffic management and a reduced speed limit will be in place. This will be disruptive and may cause delays of up to 30 minutes.

NZTA would like to apologise for the lengthy delays experienced when earlier resealing works at this location were completed. The programme has been reviewed to ensure delays will be minimised for this final section of reseal works.

Once crews finish laying the fresh chipseal, a reduced speed limit of 30km/h will be in place. That speed helps the stone chips compact and interlock properly, which is key to creating a strong, long-lasting surface.

Please stick to the reduced speed limit, if you go too fast, you’ll flick loose chips off the road, leaving gaps behind. If you go too slow, the surface can overheat and stick to your tyres, pulling up chips and damaging the seal.

We appreciate your patience and understanding while these essential works are carried out.

Please note: In the event of bad weather or unforeseen circumstances, the work may be postponed
