Rockfall works planned for State Highway 59 next week

Further work is planned for early next week to complete safety works at a rockfall site on State Highway 59 between Pukerua Bay and Paekākāriki.
The highway had traffic management in place last Friday and Saturday to mitigate rockfall risk. It followed debris falling onto the highway early last Friday morning.
However, there is more debris that must be removed to reduce the danger of further rockfalls onto the road.
It will be done on Wednesday and Thursday next week (10 and 11 December), between 9am and 4pm - outside of peak commuter traffic hours. Work may also be done on Wednesday if more time is needed to complete the job.
Because rock scaling can pose a risk to traffic, the work will be done under stop/stop traffic management. This allows traffic to be held while loose rocks are dislodged from the hill above the highway. This is essential for keeping people safe.
Drivers can expect 10-minute delays at the site when traffic is held. People travelling on State Highway 59 while this work is being completed should factor this into their travel plans.
Works schedule
- Wednesday 10 December and Thursday 11 December, 9am – 4pm.
- Stop/Stop traffic management. Vehicles will be held during rock removal.
- Expect 10-minute delays.
