Roading crews will be a familiar sight around Rotorua over the next month, with a significant piece of work taking place.
“The lead-up to Christmas is a busy time on our roads, for both those working on them and those travelling on them," says Sandra King, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) System Manager Bay of Plenty.
“To make it as smooth as possible, we need to work together. You can do your part by following the signs, temporary speed limits and any instructions our crew may give you.
From 8am on Sunday 16 November until 5:30pm on Friday 12 December, State Highway 30A (SH30A) will be closed between Te Ngae Road and Fenton Street / the right-turn bay into Pak’nSave supermarket.
This closure is the quickest and safest way to carry out the necessary road rebuild with asphalt layers, which requires large volumes of plant and equipment to be on site.
All 4 lanes of SH30A, both in each direction, will be rebuilt giving the road a fresh, smooth asphalt finish that will improve driving conditions and extend the life of the road.
While the road is closed, a detour via State Highway 30 (SH30) Te Ngae Road, left to Sala Street, right to Fenton Street, to Amohau Street and vice versa. Businesses and residents will have their access maintained into Marguerita Street and Te Ngae Road. Pedestrians and cyclists are asked to use the sign-posted track.
“This work is disruptive”, says Ms King, “however the benefits outweigh the negatives. We simply can’t complete the significant amount of asphalt rebuild work at this location without causing disruption to people’s journeys.”
