Essential state highway maintenance is planned for a critical section of State Highway 1 infrastructure near Tawa next week and will affect traffic heading in and out of the suburb.

The work was originally planned for August but was postponed due to bad weather.

Road crews will carry  out preliminary repairs to the road surface on the Takapu Road roundabout and the Takapu Road northbound off-ramp will be resurfaced.

Road closures will be in place on the nights of Tuesday, 28 October, Wednesday, 29 October, and Thursday, 30 October, between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. Traffic management will be set up from 8 p.m. The roadworks have been deliberately scheduled at night to reduce disruption and delays for the public

The work will require a full closure of the Takapu Road roundabout and the northbound on and off-ramps. The southbound off-ramp to Grenada North / Takapu Road will remain open. However, access to Takapu Road towards Tawa will be closed.

Drivers will need to use alternative routes to get in and out of Tawa, but access will be retained for all road users, residents, and businesses to Grenada North from the Takapu Road/Grenada North southbound off-ramp.

Detours on local roads will be available. These will take longer to travel, so drivers should allow extra time for their journeys (see details and maps below).

The roundabout will be resurfaced at a later stage which will require another closure. The public will be notified once timing is confirmed.

NZTA/Waka Kotahi and the Wellington Transport Alliance appreciate this work will cause disruptions and delays for drivers and residents. However, it is critical the road surface is kept in good condition. We want to thank the public for their patience and cooperation while this state highway maintenance is completed.

Work schedule

• Tuesday, 28 October, Wednesday 29, October, Thursday, 30 October. 10 pm - 4 am (weather permitting)
• SH1 Tawa northbound on and off-ramps CLOSED.
• Takapu Road roundabout CLOSED.
• SH1 southbound off-ramp open but no access available to Takapu Road towards Tawa.

Detour routes

• Northbound to Tawa:
  • detour via Westchester Drive/Middleton Road or, via the SH59 Mungavin interchange and access Tawa via Porirua/Kenepuru.
• Northbound from Tawa:
  • detour via Main Road, Tawa, Kenepuru Drive and SH59 Mungavin interchange or, via SH1 Transmission Gully to get back on SH1/SH59.
• Southbound from Tawa:
  • detour via Westchester Drive/Middleton Road and enter SH1 at the Grenada southbound onramp.
• Southbound to Tawa:
  • Detour via SH59 Mungavin interchange and access Tawa via Porirua/Kenepuru or, via the Grenada southbound offramp and Westchester Drive/Middleton Road.
