Safety barrier repairs, night works and road closure planned next week – State Highway 2, Upper Hutt

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 25 May 2026 4:37pm | Wellington

Keeping drivers safe is the priority when median wire rope barriers are repaired on State Highway 2 near Totara Park next week.

A full closure of the highway between Whakatiki Street and Totara Park Road is planned for the night of Tuesday, 2 June between 9 pm and 4:30 am.

Contractors will be fixing wire rope safety barriers, which have been struck five times since previous repairs on the route were completed in July last year.

They will also complete other maintenance, including rubbish collection and gantry inspections.

Because of the work involved, the machinery required, and the restricted width of the highway, a full road closure is needed.

The work is deliberately timed to be done at night when traffic volumes are lower to minimise travel disruption and delays.

A local road detour will be available via Totara Park Road / Fergusson Drive / Whakatiki Street. This is on local roads with lower speed limits. Drivers should allow extra time for their journeys.

Safety barrier benefits

Median safety barriers play a critical role in preventing head-on crashes, which are among the most severe types of crashes on New Zealand roads.

These barriers separate opposing traffic lanes, reducing the likelihood of vehicles crossing the centreline and significantly lowering the risk of death or serious injury.

While repairing barriers does cause short-term disruption, it is less disruptive and costly than the impact of a serious or fatal road crash.

NZTA/Waka Kotahi thanks the public for their patience and cooperation while this essential state highway maintenance is completed.
