Safety first – urgent tree removal planned for Ngauranga interchange

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 13 Mar 2026 11:08am | Wellington

Road workers will be busy next Monday night completing tree cleanup on the State Highway 2 (SH2) onramp at Ngauranga, following the storm that caused widespread damage last month.

To ensure workers and the public are kept safe during this clean-up, the Hutt Road/Ngauranga onramp onto State Highway 2 (traffic travelling to Lower Hutt) will be closed to all traffic.

The onramp will be closed on Monday night (16 March), between 9 pm and 4:30 am, to allow the work to be completed. Detours will be available.

Drivers travelling on State Highway 1 (SH1) who need to get to SH2 will need to continue to Aotea Quay, turn around at the roundabout, then travel north to Lower Hutt. Drivers travelling on Hutt Road will also need to use Aotea Quay to get to SH2.

This is a much longer route. Drivers must allow extra time for their journeys while the onramp is closed.

NZTA/Waka Kotahi and the Wellington Transport Alliance appreciate this work will cause disruption and delays for drivers. However, it is critical work and essential for making the highway safer for the public.

Works schedule and detour map:

  • Monday, 16 March, 9 pm – 4:30 am
  • Hutt Rd / SH1 Ngauranga onramp to SH2 CLOSED
  • Lower Hutt-bound traffic should detour by heading south on Hutt Road and rejoining SH1 at the Aotea Quay northbound onramp.
  • Extra travel time is required.
