UPDATE: Serious crash closes State Highway 6 north of Nelson (SH6 one lane OPEN)

State Highway 6 near Wakapuaka is now open to one lane following a serious crash this afternoon.

Traffic is being managed using Stop/Go traffic lights and a temporary speed restriction of 30 km/h is in place.

Drivers are asked travel with care through this area until the highway is fully reopened.

15 April 4:45pm

Emergency services remain at the scene of a serious crash that has closed State Highway 6 near Nelson.

The highway has been closed since approximately 3 pm following the two-vehicle incident.

Work to resolve the incident and reopen the highway continues. Traffic management is being  put in place with the aim of having the highway open to one lane early this evening.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area until further notice.

State Highway 6 is closed to all traffic following a serious crash north of Nelson, near Wakapuaka this afternoon.

The two-vehicle crash was reported around 2:45 pm this afternoon near the intersection of Todd Bush Road. 

Emergency services are at the scene - no local road detours are available.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area and delay their travel until the incident is resolved and the crash scene is cleared. At this stage there is no estimated time for when the highway will reopen.

Currently there is no direct access for drivers traveling between Nelson and Blenheim. The only alternative route is via State Highway 63 Wairau Valley and State Highway 6 south of Nelson. This is a much longer route and requires extra travel time.
