The intersection at State Highway 29 and State Highway 1 is now FULLY OPEN.

2.18pm - Part of SH1 closed in both directions at Karapiro

Due to an earlier crash on Tirau Road in Karapiro between State Highway 29 and State Highway 1 intersection, the road is closed in both directions while recovery is in progress.

We anticipate the road will be closed for the next few hours, so encourage people to plan ahead and keep allow extra time for travel.

SH1 remains open between Tīrau and Hamilton.

A detour is available for traffic heading to Tauranga (from further south than Tīrau) via SH27 and back onto SH29.

Traffic heading from Cambridge will need to use Karapiro to Toatoaroa Road then onto SH29.
