State Highway 1/Allanton-Waihola Road near Dunedin has been cleared after a serious multi-vehicle crash late this morning.

Emergency services were at the scene of the crash, near Allanton, and north of McLaren Gully Road, and traffic management was required due to a lane being blocked.

The road is now fully open again.

The stretch of highway between Allanton and Waihola, where today’s crash occurred, has a history of traffic crashes, including fatal incidents.

Average speed cameras – which calculate the average speed of road users between two cameras and can result in ticketing if the average speed is above the limit – are currently being installed by NZTA between Allanton and Waihola. Enforcement will likely start later in 2026.
