UPDATE: SH8 reopens closed after crash

State Highway 8 in Otago has reopened tonight after a serious vehicle crash.

The section of highway between State Highway 1 and Rongahere Road (near the Clutha River/Mata-Au) was closed after the crash late this afternoon. Motorists were urged to avoid the area or delay their journeys if possible, while emergency services worked at the crash scene.

The same area of SH8, but extended from Milton to Raes Junction, is subject to stop/go traffic management with a 30km/h speed restriction in place in various locations tomorrow between 7am and 7pm. Motorists are asked to take extra care.

The following detours are available:

  • For southbound traffic: Turn right onto Rongahere Road in Beaumont, follow the road as it turns into Clutha River Road, then follow Clydevale Road as it turns into Allangrange Road, turn right onto Clutha Valley Road and follow this road into Balclutha and to State Highway 1.
  • Reverse for northbound traffic.
