UPDATE: 10.25pm – SH1 in Mid Canterbury reopens after crash

State Highway 1/Rakaia Highway in Mid Canterbury has reopened following a serious crash.

The highway between the intersections of Somerton Road, and Elizabeth Avenue in Rakaia, was closed following the two-car crash reported about 5.50pm that left several people injured.

While open to traffic again, road users are asked to take care travelling through this area.


7.15pm – Traffic detour as serious crash closes SH1 in Canterbury

A detour is in place after a serious crash has closed State Highway 1/Rakaia Highway in Mid Canterbury this evening.

The crash happened south of Rakaia and near the intersection with Hatfield Overdale Road. Police say the two car-crash, reported at 5.50pm, has resulted in three people being seriously injured and a fourth person sustaining moderate injuries.

SH1 is closed between the intersections of Somerton Road, and Elizabeth Avenue in Rakaia.

People are asked to avoid the area or delay their travel if they can. The available detour for northbound traffic on SH1 is left onto Somerton Road, right onto Thompsons Track and Railway Terrace East, and right onto Elizabeth Avenue before rejoining SH1 at Rakaia. The reverse applies for southbound traffic.

The detour is not suitable for heavy vehicles.
