Update: 9.20pm – SH1 in Mid Canterbury reopens after serious crash

State Highway 1 south of Ashburton has reopened after a serious crash involving five vehicles this afternoon.

The section of SH1/Hinds Highway between Winslow Willowby Road and Lynnford Road, near Hinds, was closed after emergency services were alerted to the crash about 3.20pm. A detour was put in place for northbound and southbound traffic.

Road users are asked to drive with care through the area. 


5.30pm – Detour available for SH1 Mid Canterbury closure

A section of State Highway 1 south of Ashburton is now closed between Winslow Willowby Road and Lynnford Road, following a serious multi-vehicle crash this afternoon.

People are being asked to delay their journeys or to use an alternate route while emergency services continue their work at the crash scene.

A detour is now available. For southbound traffic, road users should turn left onto Winslow Willowby Road, then turn right onto Boundary Road, then turn right onto Lynnford Road, then turn left to rejoin SH1. The reverse applies for northbound traffic.

A further update will be provided when the status of the road changes.


4.15pm – Multi-vehicle crash closes SH1 in Mid Canterbury

A serious crash involving a number of vehicles this afternoon has forced the closure of State Highway 1/Hinds Highway, south of Ashburton.

The crash happened between the settlements of Hinds and Winslow. Emergency services are the scene of the crash.

The highway is now closed between Windermere and Swamp Roads. 

Road users are asked to avoid the area, and if in the area, to follow the directions of emergency services.
