SH1 night closures for Ashburton resurfacing
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 26 Aug 2026 11:16am | Canterbury
Resurfacing of part of State Highway 1/Archibald Street through Ashburton will mean a series of night-time closures from next week for road users to navigate.
From Wednesday 2 September to Thursday 10 September 2026, SH1/Archibald Street between Johnstone and Hassal Streets in Tinwald is due to close nightly from 8pm to 5am, except for Friday and Saturday nights. The scheduled closures to lay new asphalt may be shifted in the event of bad weather or other unexpected issues, and if this change happens notification will be provided.
A sign-posted detour will be in place during these night-time closures that is suitable for vehicles up to 50MAX.

Southbound traffic should turn left from SH1/Archibald Street onto Johnstone Street, right onto McMurdo Street, right onto Hassal Street, then left back on SH1/Archibald Street. The reverse applies for northbound traffic.
Outside of the night-time roadwork hours, people should expect uneven road surfaces and temporary speed restrictions, while temporary speed restrictions may remain in place after the resurfacing is completed and until new line marking on the road is done.
No-parking cones and signs well be placed along SH1/Archibald Street before the work starts. Vehicles that are not moved from SH1/Archibald Street before the closure begins may be towed to outside the work zone. Vehicle access to businesses/properties within the work area may be temporarily affected, but contractors will be onsite to help with property access. Footpath access will remain open.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi thanks people in advance for their patience and understanding as this important work is completed to improve the quality of the roading in Ashburton.
