SH1 Otokia Labour weekend update

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 23 Oct 2026 11:48am | Otago

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) to expect delays with an urgent northbound closure of SH1 at Henley now required from 12pm-5pm today, Friday 23 October, and from 6am-7pm Saturday 24 October, in order to continue vital rebuild work on this section of highway.

NZTA says the completion of this work was delayed due to the breakdown of a key piece of machinery at the worksite earlier in the week, and the need to urgently source replacement equipment from overseas. The work was scheduled for completion by midday today in order to avoid disruption for holiday travellers.

NZTA apologises for any unanticipated delays caused by the change in work schedule.

Southbound traffic will remain on SH1 under STOP/GO control with a temporary speed restriction in place

A light vehicle detour will be in place via Henley-Berwick Rd, Centre Rd, SH86, adding approximately five minutes of additional travel time.

Heavy vehicles will remain on SH1 under Stop/Go with all southbound traffic. Delays of up to 10 minutes should be expected, southbound traffic will be prioritised.

Outside of these work hours two-way traffic will be maintained, with a temporary speed restriction in place.

STOP/GO traffic management will resume on Tuesday 27 October, 7am-6pm each day. Outside of those times the road will remain under signalised stop/go and temporary speed limits to bed in loose chip.

NZTA thanks everyone for their patience and understanding while this work is completed.
