(Tunnel is now OPEN) SH1 Terrace Tunnel closed following crash

UPDATE 2:05 pm:

The Terrace Tunnel has reopened following a crash earlier this afternoon. 

The incident closed the tunnel in both directions for around 45 minutes until the crashed vehicles were cleared.

Drivers can expect delays in the area until queued traffic clears and should allow extra time to travel through the area.

Traffic heading in and out of the Wellington CBD can expect delays and detours  following a crash in the Terrace Tunnel this afternoon.

Contractors and  emergency services are on site working to clear the incident, which was reported at around 1:10 pm.

The route is currently CLOSED in both directions and drivers should avoid the area and use alternative routes when heading in and out of the city.

Travel delays can be expected until the crash is cleared.

Southbound traffic:

  • Use  the Terrace Offramp onto The Terrace onto Ghuznee Street onto Victoria Street onto Vivian Street. For 

Northbound traffic:

  • Use Willis Street onto Ghuznee Street onto the Terrace onto Everton Terrace onto Clifton Onramp.

These detours will add around five minutes to journey times. Drivers should plan their journey accordingly.
