NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) and Fulton Hogan are continuing major asphalt renewal works on the Cambridge section of the Waikato Expressway to keep the route safe, resilient, and ready for future growth. The team is making good progress on Stage 6, the northbound lanes between the Northern Interchange (Velodrome/Cambridge West onramp) and the Tamahere Interchange.

They are now preparing to complete final asphalting on all the ramps at the Northern Interchange (Velodrome/Cambridge West) and then at the Victoria Road Interchange (Hautapu).

The ramps at the Velodrome/Cambridge West Interchange will be completed overnight starting Tuesday 8 September for 2 nights (weather dependent). The Northern Interchange will close each night between 6pm and 6am. The detour for all traffic wanting to access SH1 from Cambridge to head north or southbound will be via the Victoria Road Interchange (Hautapu).

Following that work, the contractor will be returning to the Victoria Road Interchange (Hautapu) to complete all ramps in that area between Monday 21 and Tuesday 28 September (weather dependent). This work will also be completed using overnight ramp closures between 8pm and 6am. The southbound ramps will be completed first then the northbound.

Since we began asphalting work on the Cambridge section, Budget 2026 included funding for SH1 Cambridge to Piarere Expressway Road of National Significance (C2P). Given the timing, the contractor will also be completing asphalt works to widen the Cambridge section road alignment, near the Southern Interchange, to meet the new alignment for the online section of C2P. This widening work will also be happening around the same time as the overnight ramp closures. The widening work will be done using temporary speed limits of 50km/h and 70km/h.
